 of nature for
 the beauty of the hair

As a pioneering visionary, Patrick Alès, founder of the brand, was able to use the secrets of nature for the beauty of the hair.

Groundbreaking Patrick Alès registered the name PHYTOTHERATHRIE* in 1967 and was the first cosmetic brand to use the prefix PHYTO.

* phyto = plants, thera = therapy, thrie (from trixos) = hair

ABOUT
PHYTO

Story

In Haute Provence, the lush countryside of Southern France, the most alluring plants grow. Local farmers, eager to pass along the robust harvest to those who can harness its magic, cultivate ingredients such as lavender, sage, rosemary, and juniper. It was nearly 50 years ago and in this fertile land that Mr. Patrick Ales, one of Paris’ legendary hair stylists, captured this magic and married his two passions: hair and plants. A true visionary, Mr. Ales paved the way for botanical hair care long before the emergence of environmental awareness and “green” hair care trends. From 1968 and 1969, he released his first PHYTO products: Huile D’Alès, Phyto 7, Phytodéfrisant, and Phytopolléine. In 1969, Mr. Alès presented PHYTO to the public along with the opening of the Patrick Alès Salon in Paris, sill open today, where his clients such as screen siren Catherine Deneuve and former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, became the beneficiaries of his new botanical hair care line. With fervor and passion, he developed a range of highly concentrated, plant-based solutions to reveal hair’s natural beauty. Phyto was born.

Mission

At PHYTO, we believe that nature is one with beauty, and at the heart of our mission is passion and respect for the plant world and healthy hair. This respect extends both to our environment and to the hands of our professional partners around the world. PHYTO’s first mission is to make products with the utmost quality and effectiveness in order to reveal beautiful, healthy hair. Our responsibility is to create unique formulas, as we have been doing since 1967. At PHYTO, we keep looking ahead, researching for new plants, sophisticated botanical complexes and discovering new ways to extract and preserve the quality of the active ingredients. Just like a hairstylist is an artist, PHYTO’s quest for inspiration never ceases—we find inspiration from a look, a flower, a scent. We believe that our botanists, scientists, engineers will pave the way for a better tomorrow. They will discover new ways to create products that are even more extraordinary. We are empowered by them and by you, our clients, our friends. In the words of our Founder, “Life is ahead of us.” “The definition of beauty is, first and foremost, to accept oneself and have a sense of self-worth—that’s already a form of beauty. It is in a look; it’s in the sensation of creating something.” — Mr. Patrick Alès, Founder of PHYTO

The French Blowdry

Patrick Alès was a renowned hairstylist before he became known as the founder of PHYTO. In the mid 60’s the French Haute Coiffure innovates, and a desire of freedom goes through society and hairstyling. In 1964, Patrick Alès invents a new technique called Le brushing (a French word he created from the English – to brush). This revolutionary technique allows for drying the hair while shaping it, using the combined action of a brush and a blow dryer. It is the simultaneous action of drying and rolling up hair on the brush, strand by strand, to add tension, hold and lift that creates this unique lasting style. Patrick Alès’ brushing technique creates volume and discipline, without the stiffness of the roller sets. The brushing transformed hair-setting techniques by providing suppleness and movement, but also providing smoothness and shine. Later on that year, he developed and patented the prototype of the first “blow drying brush”, capable of drying hair while simultaneously smoothing and lifting it at root.

Natural

Today, PHYTO continues to explore the world in search of the finest ingredients. Overall, our formulas contain over 500 active botanical ingredients and are 95% botanical. Our scientists extract the most active molecules found in the root, flower, bud, fruit, resin, or seeds. The manufacturing secret lies in the various extraction methods used, such as decoction or maceration. Also, PHYTO's highly concentrated formulas are housed in recyclable aluminum and glass for their non-porous properties which help minimize the use of preservatives. THE RESULT: Formulas that are highly concentrated in active botanical ingredients, with minimal to no water added, and no parabens*, formaldehyde, petrochemicals, synthetic dyes and alcohol, or silicones**. Phytopolléine, for example, is comprised of 100% essential oils and contains over 4 pounds of fresh plants per 0.84 fl. oz. Therefore, only a small amount of product is needed to garner remarkable results. Huile D'Alès, Phyto 7, and Phytodéfrisant the first formulas released by Mr. Alès between 1956 and 1966, contain more than 99% botanical ingredients and remain favorites among beauty editors and stylists. *As of today, only two products within the Phyto line still contain parabens. However, they do contain 99.20% botanical ingredients. They are in the process of being reformulated. **To the exception of Phytomist, Phytovolume Actif, and Phytolisse Serum
